dr. linus: sneak peeks

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on March 10, 2010 by eyeoftheisland

was i the only one who exclaimed, “OH YEAH, BEN!” last week when he barged into the temple hot tob room and tried to convince sayid to join team jacob? *also, who else though that moment should be more poignant? this was the place where ben was taken as a child when sayid shot him. it is now the place where sayid went through a similar experience. just sayin’.

well, tonight we get our much-needed dose of ben-ness, and i cannot be more happy. ben “i always have a plan” linus has been one of the most fascinating characters on the show, and he deserves the proper spotlight in the final season. sneak peek clips are embedded below.

considering he was standing over their bodies with a dagger…

exile wasn’t his worst fate:

PS can ben PLEASE be my euro teacher? when i was in high school, like, eight years ago? kthanx.

PPS OHEMGEE Alex and Dr. Arzt are slated to be in this ep!!! Do you think Alex is still Ben’s daughter or his student?

as always, i’ll be posting random thoughts on twitter live. happy LOST-ing!

ben and sayid: a case study

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on March 30, 2009 by eyeoftheisland

hello, friends! apologies (again) for the delay in posting. i should learn not to promise “tomorrow” when the constant threat of day-off distractions and having to go to the dmv (shudder) is on the horizon.

however, while we are on the topic of my deliquincy, i must confess that i will be missing the april 8 episode of lost. le sigh, but i will be on vacation (!) in the carribbean. i may hand over the reins to another excellent party, but i shall keep you posted.

now, onto more important matters: HE’S OUR YOU. first of all,  i would like to posit that, at first, i thought this might not be the best title for the episode. zippy line? yes. episode-title-worthy? meh. then again, when i looked beyond that line, i thought of the “our you” part. the whole episode seemed to harp on the connection between ben and sayid. the show has a lot of polar opposites: sawyer/jack ; locke/jack ; ben/widmore; the losties/the others. and while the purpose of drawing oppositions is often to point out similarities rather than differences,”he’s our you” seemed to draw the parallels between ben and sayid.

when sayid goes to rescue hurley from santa rosa, he says “whatever ben asks you to do, do the opposite.” but, it appears that ben and sayid are not so opposite. while they may operate under different ideological systems, both ben and sayid seem to function with some of the same fundamental principles: they do what needs to be done, no matter what. where sayid uses violence, ben uses manipulation. it seems innate to them both, this ability to warp others through malevolent means. and while sayid has tried to stay away from his nature, ben seems to have wholeheartedly embraced it.

but what made ben as wiley as he is? as a kid, he seems sweet and damaged, but cruel? not yet. (although give him a few  years with that asshole roger workman…) as with the purpose of all the flashbacks in the series, we ask “what makes a man or woman who he or she is? what historical factors have lead up to who this person is at this point in his or her life?” and while some character traits seem to be influenced by historical events, lost, especially with this episode, seems to suggest that some characteristics are innate, and they cannot always be tamed.

with the explosive ending to this episode, where young ben is shot by a high-on-destiny sayid, one cannot help but ask: 1. is ben dead? can they DO THAT? WHAT THE CRAP IS GOING TO HAPPEN NOW?!?!??! and 2. if ben is not dead, if he survives this horrific incident, does this partially make him who he is today?

fatal wound?

fatal wound?

i’m going to go on the record right now and posit that young ben will live through this incident. and while i can be convinced that the “future” that sun, frank and ghost pops are in is one where ben dies, the purge happens and dharma shuts down for a very differnet reason (notice that the “orientation” hut was still widely intact; dharmaville was not yet otherville), i gotta say that lil’ ben pulls through. and if he does, that would mean that ben has, effectively, known sayid for almost his entire life. the face of the man  he trusted, who he thought would liberate him from his horrid life, but then betrayed him andattempted to kill him, would be burned into ben’s brain forever.

which, if true, makes every interaction with these two fraught with hidden meaning. ben knew that he would have to get sayid backto the island so that he would attempt to kill him as a child. but along the way, he plays with sayid like a cat with a mouse, sadistically torturing it for his own pleasure.

below, i’ve collected a series of key sayid/ben interactions for your interpreation. leave any thoughts in the comments section.

black hole sun

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on January 22, 2009 by eyeoftheisland

(the title of this post was going to be “don’t let the sun go down on me” to give a little shout-out to elton, but then i actually thought about what it was implying… yeahhhh)

so one of the big points of interest for me in the second episode, “the lie,” was characters’ motivation. i think there were double — nay triple — levels of trickery at work here and lesser (for the moment) folk like kate, jack and even sayid were foiled by scheming foes.

Dupe the First

to begin with, kate needs to stop watching scooby doo and start using her brain: someone cannot just show up at your house demanding a blood test from an “unnamed party.” i think we are safe to assume that was widmore’s doing; and how convenient that sun just happened to call kate when she didn’t know where to go next.

but while sun tells widmore that what she wants is ben’s head on a plate, i’m not totally sold. sun is used to tusseling to power-hungry men and i don’t think she would reveal her whole agenda to widmore immediately. last season, sun said that “two people are responsible” for her husband’s death: one her father, the other one yet-to-be named. with her telling widmore that she wants ben dead, we are meant to think it is ben. though, let’s be honest, he did not have much to do with directly causing jin’s “death” (which shall remain in quotes; notice that daniel dae kim is still listed in the main cast credits, which indicates that he will appear in at least five episodes. just a ghost? methinks not).

who is? in “the lie” sun tells kate that she “understands how to make hard decisions,” creepily non-accusing her of contributing to her personal tragedy. but though she may partially resent kate, i think her secondary target here is one jack shepherd. notice how she awkwardly confronts kate, then immediately focuses on the good doc. “how is jack… because i would like to punch him in the face?”

i know some of you out there might be jack lovers, but here at team bamf we’re sort of tired of the reluctant hero shtick. you have time to grow back on me, shepherd. but don’t aim too high — it is perhaps obvious my heart belongs to john locke.

in any case, i believe that sun has her own agenda at work here. she knows better than to do the dirty work of a man like widmore. look out for her to become more and more sinister as the season progresses.

Dupe the Second

so who were those guys that sayid shivved and “dishwashered” anyway? it was never really clear who the assailants were, though they did seem to know about the “safehouse,” which makes me think that the man behind the curtain, benjamin linus, was behind the whole thing. note that teh assailants did not aim to kill our friend sayid, merely “dart” him, a favorite tactics of the others. ben’s plan? well let’s rationalize:

1. sayid has been injured/darted and either ben get him right away or

2. hurley is forced to take him somewhere. sayid needs medical attention, so he takes him to

3. jack. who is now working for the ben himself.

too bad jack “neo-believer” shepherd is probably being duped by ben yet again; you can bet that ben’s got more up his sleeve then getting them all back to the island. remember that he wants to kill penny. but he also wants the favor of the island back. daddy jacob needs to be pleased.

but it seems we are all at the mercy of the lovely druid-hooded ms. hawking.  hopefully her son daniel will be able to set things right island-side…
